Biography
Josie Cotton, born Josey Jones in 1956 in Dallas, Texas, is an American singer known for her contributions to pop rock and rock music. She began her career singing with local bands in Dallas before moving to Los Angeles, California. Her breakthrough came when she met Larson Paine, who introduced her to "Johnny Are You Queer?", a song previously performed live by The Go-Go's. Released as a single by Bomp! Records, the track gained significant attention and was later re-released by Elektra Records in 1982. This led to the release of her debut album Convertible Music, which featured a blend of girl group tradition music reminiscent of the 1960s. Josie Cotton's song "He Could Be the One" from this album, along with "Johnny Are You Queer?", was included in the soundtrack of the 1983 film Valley Girl. In 1984, Elektra Records released her follow-up album From the Hip, which included a cover of Looking Glass' "Jimmy Loves Maryann" featuring guitar by Lindsey Buckingham. Throughout her career, Josie Cotton continued to release albums such as Movie Disaster Music (2006) and Invasion of the B-Girls (2007), collaborating with artists like Bill Rhea. Notable achievements include ranking "Johnny Are You Queer?" at number 80 on VH1's list of the Top 100 Greatest One Hit Wonders of the 80s in May 2018, and her appearance in the films Valley Girl (1983) and Nomads (1986).
