Biography

After Vince Clarke left Depeche Mode in 1981, he hooked up with singer Alison Moyet who herself had just left The Screaming Abdabs. Success was immediate for the duo with the Number 2 single Only You/Situation, then with Don't Go, which proved a big hit in the US and achieved major airplay on the newly launched MTV channel. Their debut album Upstairs At Eric's built on their success, hitting Number 2 in the UK charts and going platinum. Even though the duo went ahead and recorded a further album in 1983, You And Me Both, the couple decided to go their separate ways. Both found subsequent success in their next ventures with Moyet topping the charts with her first solo effort Alf in 1984. The group had already paved the way for a number of other groups to step into their shoes, and Clarke did just that after teaming up with singer Andy Bell to form new synth-pop outfit Erasure.
