Biography

Jonathan Scales, born September 14, 1984, in San Francisco, is an American steel pannist and composer. Raised in a military family, he spent his formative years moving between Maryland, Virginia, Fort Bragg, Germany, and eventually settling in North Carolina. Initially a saxophonist, Scales took up the steelpan in 2002 during his time at Appalachian State University, where he graduated in 2006. His early career saw him form the jazz fusion quartet Jonathan Scales Fourchestra, releasing their debut album Fourchestra in 2013 on Ropeadope Records. Notable collaborations include performances and recordings with Victor Wooten, Howard Levy, and Béla Fleck. Scales has released several albums as a solo artist, including Plot/Scheme (2008) and Character Farm & Other Short Stories (2011). His music has been reviewed by publications such as Modern Drummer and JazzTimes.
