Biography
Jon English was an English-born Australian singer, songwriter and actor born in 1949 in Hampstead, London. He emigrated to Australia in 1961 and began his musical career as a vocalist and rhythm guitarist for the band Sebastian Hardie. English achieved prominence in 1972 when he was cast as Judas Iscariot in the Australian production of the musical Jesus Christ Superstar. His solo recording career featured successful singles including âTurn the Pageâ (1974) and âHollywood Sevenâ (1976). In 1979, he received the TV Week Logie Award for Best New Talent in Australia for his performance in the television series Against the Wind. Between 1983 and 1985, English won four Mo Awards, including three consecutive honors for Entertainer of the Year. His discography included the studio albums Wine Dark Sea (1973), Calm Before the Storm (1980) and Some People... (1982). English died in 2016 in Newcastle, New South Wales.
