John Joseph "Johnny" Vidacovich Jr. was born on June 27, 1949, in New Orleans and is an American jazz drummer who began playing drums at age ten. He gained prominence as a member of the Astral Project band, which released its first album in 1987 after early jam sessions featuring Bobby McFerrin. Vidacovich has collaborated with notable artists such as Johnny Adams, Professor Longhair, and Mose Allison, and appeared on NPRâs Jazz Profiles hosted by Branford Marsalis. He released his debut solo album, Mystery Street, in 1995, followed by albums such as We Came To Play in 2003 and Bones in 2013. Vidacovich has received Big Easy Entertainment Awards, Offbeat awards, and Down Beat accolades. He began teaching at Loyola University New Orleans in 1982.
