Biography

Joe "Bebop" Carroll, born on November 25, 1919, in Philadelphia, was an American jazz singer. He started his career in children's shows and appeared in Stormy Weather in 1943. Influenced by Bing Crosby's early style, Carroll gained notice with Charlie Barnet's orchestra on "I'll Remember April" in 1941. From 1949 to 1953, he performed with Dizzy Gillespie’s big band, showcasing his humorous bop singing and scat vocals. He collaborated with artists like Eric Dolphy and Woody Herman, and toured Europe with Gillespie in 1953. Notable performances included "In the Land of Oo-Ba-De (The Bop Fairy Tale)" and "Lady Be Good". Carroll's album Joe Carroll with the Ray Bryant Quintet was released in 1956. Carroll passed away on February 1, 1981, in New York City.
