Biography

Joan of Arc was an American indie rock ensemble from Chicago established in 1995. They achieved professional recognition for a musical style characterized by indie rock, post-rock, and emo and for the use of electronics, samples, and multi-track recording. The ensemble was founded by the vocalist Tim Kinsella following the breakup of the ensemble Cap'n Jazz. Their recording career began with the debut studio recording A Portable Model Of (1997) released on the label Jade Tree. Joan of Arc achieved professional recognition for the studio recording How Memory Works (1998) which featured synthetic noises and vocal samples. Their discography included the studio recording The Gap (2000) which used digital recording and editing techniques. The ensemble achieved professional recognition for becoming inactive in 2001 and resuming activity in 2003. They achieved professional recognition for the studio recording Joan of Arc, Dick Cheney, Mark Twain (2004) released on the label Polyvinyl Records. Their recording career included the studio recording He's Got the Whole This Land Is Your Land in His Hands (2017) and the studio recording 1984 (2018). The ensemble became inactive in 2020 after the release of the studio recording Tim Melina Theo Bobby (2020).
