James Dexter Weatherly, professionally known as Jim Weatherly, was an American singer-songwriter who was born on March 17, 1943, in Pontotoc, Mississippi. He began his career as an all-star quarterback at Pontotoc High School and later played for the University of Mississippi before choosing a career in music over football. His songwriting gained prominence when Gladys Knight & the Pips recorded âMidnight Train to Georgiaâ (1973), which peaked at Number 1 on both the pop and R&B charts and won a Grammy Award. The track was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999 and was ranked number 29 on the Songs of the Century list selected by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Recording Industry Association of America. His solo albums include Weatherly (1972), A Gentler Time (1973), Jim Weatherly (1973), The Songs of Jim Weatherly (1974), Magnolias & Misfits (1975), The People Some People Choose to Love (1976), and Pictures & Rhymes (1976). His compositions were recorded by artists such as Ray Price, Glen Campbell, and Kenny Rogers, yielding hits that include âNeither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye)â (1973) and âBest Thing That Ever Happened to Meâ (1973). In 2006, he was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, followed by the Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame in 2011, and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014, receiving the Governorâs Award for Excellence in Music the same year. He died of natural causes at his home in Brentwood, Tennessee, on February 3, 2021.
