Biography

James Albert Cullum Jr., known as Jim Cullum Jr., was born on September 20, 1941, in Dallas, Texas. He formed the Happy Jazz Band with his father in 1962. The band performed at The Landing Jazz Club in San Antonio, which they co-founded in 1963. After his father's death in 1973, Cullum Jr. renamed the group to the Jim Cullum Jazz Band. They released albums including Super Satch (1987) and Hooray for Hoagy! (1994). The band performed at venues such as Carnegie Hall and the White House, and broadcast live performances on radio in the US from 1989 to 2012 through Public Radio International's series Riverwalk Jazz. Cullum Jr. collaborated with musicians including Louis Armstrong and Benny Goodman. He died on August 11, 2019.
