Biography

Charlie Spand, born on May 8, 1893 in Columbus, Mississippi, was an American pianist and singer known for his "barrelhouse" style of blues and boogie-woogie. In the 1920s, he began performing in Detroit, Michigan and his career took a significant turn when he moved to Chicago in 1929 and started collaborating with Blind Blake. Between June 1929 and September 1931, Spand recorded 25 tracks for Paramount Records. After a hiatus, he returned to recording in June 1940 with Okeh Records, releasing his final eight tracks. His most famous song, "Soon This Morning", served as the prototype for Sonny Boy Williamson I’s "Early in the Morning". In 1992, Document Records released The Complete Paramounts in Chronological Order (1929–1931), compiling his early work.
