Biography

Jeffrey Lewis has been an activist for American anti-folk since the 1990s, and has been involved in a number of bands and musical collaborations in addition to his other writing activities. Born in New York on November 20, 1975, he was raised by hippie parents who introduced him to the wacky folk music inherited from the Beat Generation. After studying literature and specializing in comics, he began a career as a musician, following in the footsteps of his brother Jack Lewis. His lo-fi albums, like the videos that accompany them, draw on his graphic work. Associated with the indie anti-folk movement of the 1990s, he formed several bands called Jeffrey Lewis & the Junkyard, which recorded 'Em Are I (2009), Jeffrey Lewis & Los Bolts for Manhattan (2015), Jeffrey Lewis & the Deposit Returners for Works by Tuli Kupferberg (2018) and Jeffrey Lewis & the Voltage for Bad Wiring (2019). Many of his recordings are released only on cassette or CD in limited editions, while others reach a wider audience. Thirty years after his debut, he has lost none of his verve on The Even More Freewheelin' Jeffrey Lewis (2025).
