Biography

Donny McCaslin has been exposed to jazz ever since childhood. His father was a vibe player and at the age of twelve Donny was invited to play in his father's band where he became mentored by Paul Contos and Brad Hecht, both members of his father's ensemble. After joining and performing with his high school band in Europe and Japan he enrolled on a scholarship at the Berklee College of Music where he met Gary Burton, one of the corner stones of the Berklee teaching staff. McCaslin subsequently toured with Burton's band before moving to New York and joining jazz fusion outfit Steps Ahead. Whilst playing with his own group in New York's 55 Bar, a well known haunt for musicians, McCaslin and his band were discovered by David Bowie, who chose McCaslin's band to back him on the critically acclaimed Blackstar album. Following Bowie's death in 2016 McCasklin released the album Beyond Now, featuring a number of reworkings of Bowie songs including the track Warzawa from the album Low and A Small Plot Of Land from Bowie's 1995 concept album Outside.
