James Melton was an American opera singer born on January 2, 1904 in Moultrie, Georgia. He received vocal training from Gaetano de Luca and Enrico Rosati before moving to New York. Melton started his music career as a popular singer in the late 1920s, recording for Columbia Records in autumn of 1927. He transitioned to operatic singing in the mid-1930s, debuting at Town Hall on April 22, 1932. Melton performed with various opera companies, including the Metropolitan Opera, where he debuted as Tamino in The Magic Flute on December 7, 1942. He also appeared in film musicals such as Stars Over Broadway (1935) and Ziegfeld Follies (1946). Melton died of pneumonia on April 21, 1961, in New York City.
