Lawrence Whisonant, known professionally as Lawrence Winters, was born on 15 November 1915 in King's Creek, South Carolina, and became an American bassâbaritone singer. After private studies in Salisbury, North Carolina, he entered Howard University in 1941, where he was mentored by Todd Duncan, and earned a bachelor's degree in Music in 1944. His first public appearance as a soloist occurred in 1942 with the Naumburg Orchestral Concerts, and he made his recital debut at Town Hall in 1947. Winters' operatic breakthrough came in 1948 with his debut at the New York City Opera as Amonasro in Aida, a role that would recur throughout his career. His recordings include "Miteinander, Füreinander"(1963), which charted in Germany. He toured extensively in Europe and the United States, performing with the Hamburg State Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, and the Vienna State Opera, and appeared in the 1951 recording of Gershwin's Porgy and Bess with Camilla Williams. In 1960 he returned to Broadway in The Long Dream, earning a Tony Award nomination. Lawrence Winters died on 24 September 1965 in Hamburg, Germany, at the age of fifty, and was interred at Ohlsdorf Cemetery.
