Biography

James Keelaghan, born October 28, 1959 in Calgary, Alberta, is a Canadian folk singer-songwriter. He studied history at the University of Calgary and began his music career with the release of Timelines in 1987. Keelaghan's early albums include Small Rebellions (1990) and My Skies (1993), which won the Juno Award for Roots & Traditional Album of the Year in 1994. His music often addresses social issues, with notable songs including "Kiri's Piano" about Japanese Canadian internment and "October 70" about the FLQ crisis. Keelaghan collaborated with guitarist Oscar Lopez on albums Compadres (1997) and ¿Buddy Where You Been? (2007), both nominated for Juno Awards for Roots & Traditional Album of the Year: Group. His later works include House of Cards (2009) and History: The First 25 Years (CD and DVD) (2013). Keelaghan became the Artistic Director of the Summerfolk Music and Crafts Festival in Owen Sound in 2011.
