Jake Hess, born Manchild Hess on December 24, 1927, in Mt. Pisgah near Athens, Alabama, was an American singer known for his contributions to gospel music. He began his career at age 16 with the John Daniel Quartet, making his recorded debut on "Just a Prayer Away". Hess sang with various quartets including The Statesmen Quartet from 1948 until 1963. In 1963, he formed The Imperials, known for their innovative use of electric guitars and drums. Hess also sang backup on several of Elvis Presley's albums and performed at Presley's funeral in 1977. His solo career included notable albums such as The Great Voice of Jake Hess (1962) and Everything Is Beautiful (1970). Hess won multiple Grammy Awards, including Best Sacred Performance for "Beautiful Isle Of Somewhere" in 1968. He passed away on January 4, 2004.
