It's Immaterial, an English indie pop band from Liverpool, was formed in 1980 by John Campbell (vocals), Martin Dempsey (guitar), and Henry Priestman (keyboards), all former members of Yachts. Paul Barlow joined on drums, but by 1984 the lineup had reduced to a duo with Campbell and Jarvis Whitehead. The band's first notable appearance was recording four sessions for John Peel at BBC Radio 1 in November 1981. Their breakthrough came with the single "Driving Away from Home (Jim's Tune)", which reached number 18 on the UK Singles Chart in April 1986. This success was followed by another minor hit, "Ed's Funky Diner (Friday Night, Saturday Morning)". In September 1986, It's Immaterial released their debut album Life's Hard and Then You Die, which included several notable tracks such as "A Gigantic Raft (In the Philippines)" and "White Man's Hut". The band's second album, Song, was released in 1990. Despite positive reviews, it was a commercial flop. In 2016, a deluxe edition of Life's Hard and Then You Die was released, featuring remastered tracks and bonus content. It's Immaterial ceased performing in 1990, but their music continued to gain recognition over the years with the release of unreleased songs and a "lost and found" album House for Sale, which was finally released in September 2020 through Burning Shed Distribution.
