Heather Elaine Rankin was born on October 24, 1967, in Mabou, Nova Scotia. She began singing as a child, and her parents encouraged her and her siblings to perform at community concerts. In 1989, Heather and four of her siblings recorded their debut album, The Rankin Family, the same year they formed the group. Their second album, Fare Thee Well Love, was released in 1990 and included the title track "Fare Thee Well Love", which peaked in the top ten on the RPM Country and Adult Contemporary Tracks in 1992. In 1992, they signed with EMI Canada and were nominated for three Juno Awards, eventually winning their first in 1994. Between 1989 and 1999, the family band released five full albums, a five-song EP, and two compilations. They won six Juno Awards. They toured extensively in Canada, the U.S., the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand. After The Rankin Family disbanded, she released solo records, including A Fine Line (2016).
