Biography
Formed in Istanbul, Turkey in 1985, Grup Yorum is a Kurdish group founded by students from Marmara University. Combining Kurdish folk and Turkish folk with political lyrics, the original quartet of friends formed Grupo Yorum as a reaction to a military coup that took place on September 12, 1980, which had enabled the Turkish Armed Forces to seize power and establish an authoritarian political regime. Alongside music, they also publish a magazine that focuses on art, culture, and literature as well as music. With lyrics sung in Kurdish, Arabic, Circassian, and Turkish, their music utilizes instruments such as violin, oboe, and guitar. Since the release of their debut album, Sıyrılıp Gelen, in 1987, theyâve released over 20 album including Haziranda Ãlmek Zor / Berivan (1991), Gel Ki Safaklar Tutussun (1993), Ileri (1994), Yürüyüs (2003), BaÅeÄmeden (2008), Ruhi Su (2015), and Ä°lle Kavga (2017). Grup Yorumâs most famous songs include "Eylül," "Biz Variz," and "Biz Hiç Teslim Olmadık Ki."
