Biography

Grant Maloy Smith, born August 28, 1957, in Jacksonville, Florida, is an American singer-songwriter known for his contributions to American roots music. Smith began playing guitar at a young age, initially performing songs by The Beatles. His first band, Britannia, formed in 1981, played original music written by Smith. Between 2008 and 2012, Smith released several pop/rock albums under his own label, Small Dog Records, including Already August (2008), Big Bowl of Courage (2010), American Merman (2011), and Mr. Sparklepants (2012). In 2013, Smith transitioned to Americana with the album Yellow Trailer, which was remastered and re-released in 2015 on Suburban Cowboy Records. His subsequent albums include Dust Bowl: American Stories (2017) and Appalachia: American Stories (2021). He has toured the United States, Europe, and Mexico, sometimes opening for other artists like Rita Coolidge, and has also performed at various notable venues like The Bitter End and Carnegie Hall.
