Biography

Fruit Bats is an American indie rock ensemble formed in 1997 in Chicago. Eric D. Johnson taught at the Old Town School of Folk Music and released cassettes before joining the group Califone in 2000. The band released the studio recording Echolocation in 2001. After signing with Sub Pop in 2002, the group released Mouthfuls in 2003, featuring the recording "When U Love Somebody". Johnson performed with the ensemble The Shins between 2006 and 2010. Subsequent studio recordings included The Ruminant Band (2009) and Tripper (2011). The project became inactive in 2013 but resumed in 2015. Johnson released Absolute Loser in 2016 and signed with Merge Records in 2018. He established the group Bonny Light Horseman in 2018. Later recordings included Gold Past Life (2019), The Pet Parade (2021), and A River Running to Your Heart (2023). Studio albums Baby Man (2025) and The Landfill (2026) appeared on Merge.
