Biography

Griselda Andreatini, known professionally as Gilda Mignonette, was born on October 28, 1890, in Naples, Italy. She started her career singing in theatrical revue shows and later focused on the canzone napoletana genre. In the mid-1920s, she moved to New York and achieved international fame with Neapolitan classics like "A cartulina 'e Napule" ("Postcard from Naples") and "E l'emigrante chiagne" ("And the Emigrant Cries"). Mignonette recorded with major labels such as Columbia and His Master's Voice, and toured extensively. She married Feliciano "Frank" Acierno Jr. in June 1926, whose father owned Acierno's Thalia Theater, which boosted her career in the United States. In the early 1950s, Mignonette faced severe health issues and passed away on June 8, 1953, during her journey by boat off the Algerian coast.
