Biography
Ghulam Farid Sabri, a Pakistani qawwali singer born in 1930 in Kalyana, Punjab, British India, began his musical training at the age of six under his father, Inayat Hussain Sabri. He gave his first public performance at the annual Urs festival of the Sufi saint Mubarak Shah Sahab in 1946 and later joined Ustad Kallan Khanâs qawwali party in India. After migrating to Pakistan in 1947, he joined his younger brother Maqbool Ahmed Sabriâs ensemble in 1956, which later evolved into the Sabri Brothers under his leadership. The group gained widespread acclaim for releases such as âBhardo Jholi Meri Ya Muhammad,â âTajdar E Haram,â and âO Sharabi Chord De Peena,â as well as for performing works in Persian, including compositions by Amir Khusro. The Sabri Brothers received the Pride of Performance award from the President of Pakistan in 1978. Ghulam Farid Sabri died on April 5, 1994.
