Géraud Portal, born on December 28, 1987, in Bourges, France, is a double bass player known for his work in contemporary jazz. He began playing the electric bass at age eight and later switched to the double bass after discovering jazz. Portal studied under François Gallix and Gaël Horellou, members of the Mû-Kollektiv, and was mentored by David S. Ware, who invited him to New York, where he met William Parker. His professional career began in 2002 as part of saxophonist Gaël Horellouâs trio. In 2014, Portal released Fort Greene Story with Ari Hoenig, Arnold Lee, Ben Solomon, and Kush Abadey. In 2015, he collaborated with pianist Ãtienne Déconfin on the album Brothers. In 2017, he recorded the live album Let My Children Hear Mingus at Le Duc des Lombards in Paris as a tribute to Charles Mingus.
