Biography

George Greeley was an American pianist, conductor, and composer born as Giorgio Guariglia on 23 July 1917 in Westerly, Rhode Island. He achieved professional recognition as an arranger for big bands and joined the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra (1940). During World War II, he conducted a U.S. Air Force band. Greeley performed as a pianist and orchestrator on approximately 200 motion pictures for Columbia Pictures, including the film The Eddy Duchin Story (1956). Concurrently, he served as a music director at Capitol Records, collaborating with artists including Gordon MacRae and Jo Stafford. In the late 1950s, he signed with Warner Bros. Records and recorded a series of studio recordings characterized as “Popular Piano Concertos”. The compilation The Best of the Popular Piano Concertos (1961) reached number 29 on the charts. Greeley achieved professional recognition for composing themes for television programs including My Favorite Martian (1963) and Nanny and the Professor (1970). Greeley died on 26 May 2007.
