Biography

Born in Chambéry on September 3, 1981, five years after his brother, violinist Renaud Capuçon, Gautier Capuçon won first prizes in cello and piano at the Conservatoire. After classes at the Paris Conservatoire (CNR) and a first prize for cello (1997), he joined the European Union Youth Orchestra and the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester. In 2000, after winning first prize at the Académie internationale de musque de Saint-Jean-de-Luz (1998), he was awarded first prizes in cello and chamber music at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique de Paris (CNSMP). His professional career developed on stage with the greatest orchestras and soloists, and on record. His recordings include chamber music by Ravel, Brahms and Schubert, Saint-Saëns's Carnaval des animaux (2004), the recital of duets for violin and cello Inventions with his brother (2006), Brahms's Quartets for piano and strings with Nicholas Angelich and Gérard Caussé (2008), Dvořák's Cello Concerto conducted by Paavo Järvi (2009), Prokofiev's Symphony Concertante with the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev (2010), Chamber Music for Strings and Piano (2011), the Arpeggione recital (cello and piano sonatas by Schubert, Britten and Schumann with Frank Bailey, 2013), Shostakovich's Cello Concertos (2015) and the Intuition recital (2018). Released the following year, Schumann's Concerto for Cello and Orchestra is recorded in public with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe conducted by Bernard Haitink. In 2019, the cellist joins forces with Chinese pianist Yuja Wang for the Franck - Chopin cello and piano sonata recital and a joint tour. One of the world's best-known classical musicians, through his recordings and long tours with pianist Jérôme Ducros, is also one of the jurors on the TV show Prodiges for several years running. In 2023, his Destination Paris recital featured popular tunes with the Orchestre de chambre de Paris conducted by Lionel Bringuier. The following year saw him collaborate with Antonio Pappano and the London Symphony Orchestra on a program featuring concertos by Elgar and Walton. He also formed the Capucelli Ensemble, which accompanied him on a homonymous album of varied arias, and then recorded Gaïa (2025), in which he performed pieces by contemporary composers such as Max Richter, Ludovico Einaudi, Joe Hisaichi, Olivia Belli, Bryce Dessner, JB Dunckel and Nico Muhly.
