Biography

Classical cellist Edgar Moreau was born in Paris, France on April 3, 1994. After encountering a cello during a visit to an antique store with his father when he was four, he became interested in and started studying the instrument. At the age of seven, he also began to study piano. It was with the piano that he won First Prize at the Conservatoire à rayonnement régional de Boulogne-Billancourt, France in 2010. After following the teaching of Xavier Gagnepain, he continued his studies at the Conservatoire de Paris with Philippe Muller (cello) and Claire Désert (chamber music). At 17, he won Second Prize at Russia’s International Tchaikovsky Competition. Edgar Moreau released his debut album, Play: Works for Cello and Piano, a collaboration with pianist Pierre-Yves Hodique, in 2014. The album and his live performances brought him to an international stage, and, over the course of his career, he earned awards and accolades from critics all over the world. Further albums include Giovincello (2015), Sonates & Trio (2017) with Renaud Capuçon and Bertrand Chamayou, Franck, Strohl, Poulenc: Sonatas for Cello & Piano (2018) with David Kadouch, Offenbach & Gulda: Cello Concertos (2019), A Family Affair (2020) with his brothers and her sister, then Transmission (2022), which was recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic.
