Biography

A benchmark band on the English post-punk scene, known for their abrasive sound and political lyrics, Gang of Four produced two major albums, Entertainment! (1979) and Solid Gold (1981), followed by Songs of the Free (1982) and Hard (1983), before disbanding and re-emerging through a series of reformations. Led by guitarist Andy Gill (1956-2020) and singer Jon King (b. 1955), Gang of Four resurfaced for the albums Mall (1991) and Shrinkwrapped (1995). Its influence proved powerful on the post-punk revival scene of the early 2000s, and led to the original quartet reuniting to re-record and remix some of its tracks on the album Return the Gift (2005). In 2011, the original Content album is presented by a band reorganized around the two leaders. Only Andy Gill and three new recruits contribute to What Happens Next (2015) and Happy Now (2019). An historic member since the early days, guitarist Andy Gill died of pneumonia on February 1, 2020, at the age of 64, followed by bassist Dave Allen, on April 5, 2025, at the age of 69.
