Biography

Love and Rockets formed in 1985 in Northampton, England, when former Bauhaus members Daniel Ash (vocals, guitar, saxophone), David J (bass, vocals), and Kevin Haskins (drums, synthesizers) united to explore a fusion of post-punk, psychedelia, and mainstream rock, debuting with the psychedelic-tinged Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven, which featured the Motown-style cover “Ball of Confusion” and the single “If There’s a Heaven Above.” They followed up with Express in 1986, blending underground sensibilities with pop hooks on tracks like “Kundalini Express” and “All in My Mind,” and then released Earth, Sun, Moon in 1987, marked by its folk-influenced indie sound and the alternative hit “No New Tale to Tell.” Their commercial breakthrough came with the gold-certified self-titled album Love and Rockets in 1989, led by the iconic single “So Alive,” which reached number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became a staple of modern rock radio. The band then shifted into more experimental territory with Hot Trip to Heaven (1994) and adopted a harder rock approach on Sweet F.A. (1996), before releasing their final studio album Lift in 1998 and disbanding the following year. They briefly reunited for live performances in 2007 and 2008, playing major festivals such as Coachella and Lollapalooza, and reemerged again in 2023 with a reunion performance at the Cruel World Festival followed by a North American tour. In 2024, Love and Rockets continued this renewed activity with archival releases and additional live dates, reaffirming their legacy as enduring figures in alternative and post-punk music.
