Biography

Fridge was formed in 1995 by school friends Kieran Hebden, Adem Ilhan, and Sam Jeffers in London, United Kingdom; the trio began as a post‑rock ensemble with Kieran Hebden on guitar and samples, Adem Ilhan on bass, and Sam Jeffers on drums. Their first breakthrough came with the Eph album in 1999, which showcased a rhythm‑heavy sound influenced by krautrock and introduced sampling as a core element. In 2001, the band released the album Happiness, featuring tracks such as "Cut Up Piano and Xylophone" and "Five Four Child Voice". The next year they issued the Paradise EP (1999) and the Angel EP (2000), before a hiatus that lasted until 2007. Their double album The Sun appeared on 10 June 2007, receiving critical acclaim from publications such as Spin and Drowned in Sound. After a brief reunion performance at Bardens Boudoir in August 2007 and a Field Day festival appearance, Fridge ceased live activity; the members pursued solo projects-Kieran Hebden as Four Tet, Adem Ilhan as Adem-and released the compilation Early Output 1996–1998 in 2009. In April 2023, Happiness was re‑issued on vinyl for its twentieth anniversary, restored and remastered for contemporary audiences.
