Biography

Frank John Yankovic, known as Frankie Yankovic, was born on July 28, 1915, in Davis, West Virginia. He began playing the accordion at age nine and started performing at community events by his teenage years. In the 1930s, he made radio appearances and released his first records for the Yankee and Joliet labels. Yankovic's breakthrough came with platinum singles "Just Because" (1947) and "Blue Skirt Waltz" (1949). He earned the title "America's Polka King" after winning a battle of the bands in Milwaukee in 1948. During World War II, he got frostbite while fighting in the Battle of the Bulge but refused amputation. Instead, he was assigned to a service to entertain troops. Yankovic released numerous albums, including The All Time Great Polkas (1959) and One More Time! (1993). In 1986, he won the first-ever Grammy Award in the Best Polka Recording category for his album 70 Years of Hits. Yankovic died on October 14, 1998, in New Port Richey, Florida.
