Biography

Pawlo Humeniuk, born on June 18, 1883 in Podwołoczyska, Austria-Hungary (now Pidvolochysk, Ukraine), was a Ukrainian American fiddler. He arrived in the United States in 1908 and worked as a violin maker while he performed at local celebrations. In 1925, Humeniuk signed with Okeh Records and recorded traditional Ukrainian music, including kolomyikas, kozachoks, and polkas. His early records sold well, and established him as a prominent figure in Ukrainian American popular music. After 1926, he recorded Polish music under the name Paweł Humeniak, and significantly influenced the development of American polka with hits like "Kanarek" (1928). Humeniuk's last recording was in 1940. He died on January 24, 1965.
