Biography

Willie Nelson—born 29 April 1933, in Abbott, Texas—is a country music icon, a musician who flirted with rock, pop, reggae, and jazz whilst keeping his country roots firmly based within his music throughout his career. He was a member of the country outlaws, so-called because of their refusal to conform to the new musical leanings of Nashville. While he scored several hits in the 1960s, he became a country music superstar in 1975 when he scored the number 1 single “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain,” which was taken from the album Red Headed Stranger. He also achieved crossover success, appealing to rock and pop fans alike. His lyrical talent should also not be underestimated as he was the writer responsible for such hits as Roy Orbison's “Pretty Paper” and Patsy Cline's “Crazy,” penned during the early days of his career in Nashville when he worked as a songwriter, unable to secure a record contract of his own. Finally establishing himself as a popular recording artist in the 1970s with a series of hit albums, he also branched out into acting and appeared in several films including The Electric Horseman (1979), Honeysuckle Rose (1980), and Barbarosa (1982). Willie Nelson expanded his audience with a series of country albums as well as unique releases like Stardust, which focused on classic pop songs from ‘the Great American Songbook.’ His career flourished into the 1980s but he encountered tax issues with the IRS in the early 1990s, which briefly tarnished his ‘outlaw’ image. He bounced back and set out on a continuous touring schedule from the late 1990s into the 2000s. In 2005, he released a reggae album titled Countryman which featured Toots and the Maytals on the track “I'm a Worried Man.” He continued to tour, with appearances at charity gigs, including the 2005 Tsunami Relief Austin to Asia concert, and continued to produce new music with albums Two Men With the Blues with Wynton Marsalis (2008), Moment of Forever with Buddy Cannon (2008), and Country Music (2010), a compilation of country standards. In 2012, Willie Nelson moved to Legacy Records where he released Heroes, his 60th studio album. He followed this with To All the Girls..., an album of duets with female performers including Dolly Parton, Norah Jones, Emmylou Harris, and Carrie Underwood. The album scored him a number 2 on Billboard's Top Country Albums Chart, making it his highest-ranking record in more than 20 years. Band of Brothers was released in 2014, earning him a number 1 spot on the chart. 2017 saw the release of God's Problem Child which debuted at number 1 on the Top Country Albums Chart and number 10 on the Billboard 200. 2018 saw the release of album Last Man Standing, which peaked at number 2 on the UK Country Albums Chart and number 3 on the Billboard Top Country Albums Chart, followed by the Frank Sinatra tribute album My Way. In 2019, he released the album Ride Me Back Home, which was followed in 2020 by the landmark arrival of First Rose of Spring, his seventieth LP, produced by longtime collaborator Buddy Cannon. One of the most prolific artists in country and pop music history, Willie Nelson continued to release acclaimed albums such as That’s Life (2021), The Willie Nelson Family (2021), A Beautiful Time (2022), I Don’t Know a Thing About Love (2023), Bluegrass (2023), and The Border (2024). Also in 2024, he impressively dropped his 76th solo album, Last Leaf on the Tree, an exploratory 13-track record brimming with sonic reinterpretations of artists including Tom Waits ("Last Leaf") and the Flaming Lips ("Do You Realize??"). Willie Nelson worked with his son Micah Nelson on the LP as well as Daniel Lanois on pedal steel, John Densmore on percussion and other personnel. In 2025, Workin' Man: Willie Sings Merle paid tribute to his late friend Merle Haggard.
