Biography

Formed in Los Angeles in 1979, this American alternative band fuses rock, metal, funk and ska. Consisting of a core group including Angelo Moore (saxophone, vocals) Walter A. Kibby II (trumpet, vocals), Kendall Jones (guitar, vocals), Christopher Dowd (keyboards, trombone, vocals), John Norwood Fisher (bass) and Philip "Fish" Fisher (drums), Fishbone released their debut EP of the same name in 1985, followed by the album In Your Face (1986), which established their reputation as a fast-paced band with committed lyrics and incendiary live performances. Considered a funk-punk classic by Parliament/Funkadelic's George Clinton, Truth and Soul (1988) made a timid Billboard debut at #153, but the band soon established their worldwide reputation with the follow-up The Reality of My Surroundings (1991), charting at #49. Sharing the stage with Red Hot Chili Peppers and Jane's Addiction, in 1993 they delivered Give a Monkey a Brain and He'll Swear He's the Center of the Universe (No. 99). In the midst of internal tensions and disputes with Columbia/Sony, the band underwent major changes, signing with the independent Rowdy label for their next album, Chim Chim's Badass Revenge (1996), at No. 158. Despite its influence on the metal scene, Fishbone failed to recapture the commercial success it had enjoyed, and Fishbone and the Familyhood Nextperience Present: The Psychotic Friends Nuttwerx (2000), featuring contributions from Gwen Stefani, Rick James and early fan George Clinton, followed in near indifference. Six years later, Moore and Dowd remain the only original members when Still Stuck in Your Throat (2006) is released. The following decade saw the band concentrate mainly on the live scene, unveiling only the EPs Crazy Glue in 2011 and Intrinsically Interwind in 2014. With no loss of energy, Fishbone celebrates its return in 2025 with the album Stockholm Syndrome.
