Biography
Tinariwen is a Tuareg band originating from Tessalit, Kidal Region, Mali, formed in 1979 by Ibrahimâ¯Agâ¯Alhabib, Alhassaneâ¯Agâ¯Touhami, and Abdallahâ¯Agâ¯Alhousseyni. The collective first recorded homemade cassettes in the Sahara, gaining regional circulation before the release of Kelâ¯Tinariwen in 1991. Their breakthrough came with Theâ¯Radioâ¯Tisdasâ¯Sessions in 2001, which introduced the group to international audiences and led to tours across Europe, North America, and Asia. Subsequent albums-Amassakoul (2004), Amanâ¯Iman:â¯Waterâ¯Isâ¯Life (2007), Imidiwan:â¯Companions (2009), Tassili (2011), Emmaar (2014), Elwan (2017), Amadjar (2019), Amatssou (2023), and Hoggar (2026)-were released on labels such as LoâJo and Warner, featuring collaborations with Nelsâ¯Cline, Joshâ¯Klinghoffer, and Danielâ¯Lanois. The group received three Grammy nominations, winning Best World Music Album for Tassili in 2012, and earned a Libera Award for Amadjar in 2020. Tinariwenâs desertâblues sound has influenced a new generation of Tuareg musicians, and the band continues to tour internationally, maintaining its status as a key voice in world music.
