Active throughout the 1960s, Esther & Abi Ofarim was an Israeli folk and pop duo that achieved success in Germany and throughout Europe. Esther Zaied (born June 13, 1941) met guitarist Avraham âAbiâ Reichstade (born on October 5, 1937) in 1958 and were married later that year. They spent free time singing together at home before Esther joined Abiâs musical duo Ofarim. With the addition of Esther, the group became the Ofarim Trio. When third member Shulik Kraus left the group, they began performing under the name Esther & Abi Ofarim. After appearing in the film Burning Sands in 1960, they released their debut album, Haofarim (Sings Israelic Ballads), a collection of rearranged Jewish songs. The debut and their follow-up, Foibles and Fables (1962). were both successful in Israel. Esther & Abi Ofarim relocated to Geneva, Switzerland, which began a very busy period in their career as they recorded songs in several different languages and even recording an album in the US. That 1963 album was titled Esther Ofarim & Abraham in America and Songs Der Welt in Germany. In 1964, they scored a Top 10 hit in the Netherlands with the single "One More Dance (Your Husband Is Worse)." Several other hit singles and albums followed including the Number 1 album Das Neue Esther & Abi Ofarim Album (1966). They scored the biggest German hit with the Bee Gees-penned âMorning of My Lifeâ (1967), which rose to Number 2 on the singles chart. While touring and doing promotion in the US, they appeared on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour and were offered a chance to record a song called âCinderella Rockerfella.â The single reached the top of the UK singles chart although it only made it to Number 100 in the US. After several more European hits, the duoâs marriage began to crumble, which led to the duo splitting up in early 1969. Their divorce was finalized in 1970. Abi Ofarim died on May 4, 2018, at the age of 80.
