José DomÃnguez Muñoz, known as El Cabrero, was born on 19 October 1944 in Aznalcóllar, Seville, Spain. Before becoming a professional cantaor, he worked as a goat herder, a rural identity that remained central to his stage name and public image. His artistic career began in 1972 with Salvador Távoraâs La Cuadra de Sevilla, and he made his solo debut in Geneva in 1973. El Cabrero recorded his first album, Asà canta El Cabrero, in 1975, followed by releases such as A mà me llaman Cabrero in 1980 and Le sigo cantando a Huelva in 1985. In 1986, he won prizes for soleá and malagueña at the Concurso Nacional de Arte Flamenco de Córdoba. His 1988 album Encina y cobre began a long association with guitarist Paco del Gastor, while ParÃs â94 documented his international reach. In the 1990s, El Cabrero appeared on world music stages and was linked to Peter Gabrielâs Secret World period, then explored Argentine tango on Sin Remache in 1996. Later albums included Luz de Luna, Por los caminos del viento, and Correo de Vélez in 2016. Health problems after a 2019 stroke reduced his activity, and one of his final major performances took place at the Festival de Jerez in 2020. The 2025 single âLamento de la Llamaâ appeared shortly before the end of a five-decade career built on flamenco cante, rural identity, and social commitment; El Cabrero died on 13 May 2026.
