Biography

Carmen Amaya, born on November 2, 1918, in Somorrostro, Barcelona, Spain, was a Spanish Romani flamenco dancer and singer. She began her career performing with her father, José Amaya Amaya, a guitarist who played in pubs. Her breakthrough came when she was introduced to more prestigious venues by Josep Santpere, leading to her debut at the Spanish Theatre in Barcelona. In 1930, Amaya joined the Manuel Vallejo company and performed across Spain. She gained national success through performances at notable theaters such as the Zarzuela Theatre in Madrid. Her film career included roles in La hija de Juan Simón and Maria de la O. Amaya's dance style showcased the purest form of flamenco, and her performances were highly successful in cities like New York. Amaya passed away on November 19, 1963.
