Biography

Eddie Calvert was an English trumpeter born as Albert Edward Calvert on March 15, 1922, in Preston. He achieved professional recognition for a musical career characterized by easy listening and for being introduced on television as the “Man with the Golden Trumpet”. Calvert achieved professional recognition for a career that began in his local brass band and joining the Preston Town Silver Band at age 11. After the Second World War, he achieved professional recognition for performing with popular dance orchestras including Geraldo's and Billy Ternent. His recording career began with recordings for the label Melodisc between 1949 and 1951 before signing with the label Columbia. Calvert achieved professional recognition for achieving seven instrumental hits on the UK Singles Chart between 1953 and 1958. His discography included two Number 1 recordings, "Oh, Mein Papa" (1954) and "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White" (1955). He achieved professional recognition for co-writing the song "My Son, My Son" (1954) which was a hit for the musician Vera Lynn. Calvert achieved professional recognition for moving to South Africa in 1968 and serving as the chief promoter for the Cultural Section of the West Rand Bantu Affairs Administration Board starting in 1974. He died of a heart attack on August 7, 1978, in Rivonia.
