Biography
Samuel J. Hoffman, born on July 23, 1903 in New York City, was an American thereminist. At age 14, he began playing the violin professionally under the stage name Hal Hope. In the early 1930s, Hoffman acquired a 1929 RCA theremin and formed a nine-piece swing orchestra. In 1944, composer Miklos Rozsa enlisted Hoffman to play the theremin in the orchestral score of Alfred Hitchcock's Spellbound, which won an Academy Award for Best Original Score. Following this success, Hoffman contributed to several soundtracks, including The Spiral Staircase and Impact. In 1947, he collaborated with Les Baxter and Harry Revel to record Music Out of the Moon, which became a best-selling theremin record. Hoffman died of a heart attack on December 6, 1967.
