Dr. Motte (Matthias Roeingh, born 1960 in Berlin) is a central figure in the birth of German techno culture. He started out as a DJ in the early 1980s, before becoming a key figure in Berlin's underground electronic scene after the fall of the Wall. In 1989, he co-founded the Love Parade, initially a small political demonstration for "peace, love and music", which evolved into one of the world's biggest electronic music events. Renowned for his energetic, festive techno sets, Dr. Motte helped define the open, euphoric spirit of early European rave culture. WestBam (Maximilian Lenz, born 1965 in Münster) is one of Germany's most influential techno DJs and producers. First appearing on the scene in the 1980s, he played a key role in shaping the sound of early raves, blending electro, hip-hop and house influences to create ultra-dynamic clubbing tracks. WestBam was closely associated with the Love Parade and Mayday events, producing iconic anthems such as "Sonic Empire" with Members of Mayday. His work helped propel techno from underground clubs to major festival stages, making him a key architect of Germany's rave explosion. Together, Dr. Motte and WestBam created the official Love Parade anthems from 1997 to 2000: "Sunshine" (ranked #5), "Love Parade 1998 (One World One Future)" (#6), "Music Is the Key (Love Parade 99)" (#27) and "Love Parade 2000 (One World One Love)" (#9). They are among the pioneers who transformed Berlin into the techno capital of the world, and helped turn rave culture into a global movement.
