Biography

Eat Static was formed in 1989 in Frome, Somerset, England by drummer Merv Pepler and keyboardist Joie Hinton, who had previously played in Ozric Tentacles. Their early collaboration under the name Wooden Baby foreshadowed the rave and acid house elements that would define their sound. The duo released several singles including "Inanna" (1991), "Monkey Man" (1991), "The Alien E.P." (1991), "Almost Human" (1992), and "Survivors" (1994), followed by the EP Bony Incus in 1996, establishing a reputation for complex time signatures and extraterrestrial themes. In 1998 the duo issued the single "Hybrid Remixed" and the EP Contact…, while the full‑length Dead Planet appeared in 2015 after a period of sporadic releases and collaborations with artists such as Steve Jolliffe of Tangerine Dream and Will White of the Propellerheads. Throughout their career, Eat Static toured with Ozric Tentacles and signed to labels including Planet Dog and Mesmobeat, releasing albums such as Abduction (1993) and Science of the Gods (1997). The group’s work on the RTS game Conquest Earth expanded their reach beyond club circuits. In February 2008, Joie Hinton departed to focus on family, leaving Merv Pepler to continue the project solo; no subsequent disbandment or death has been recorded. The band’s legacy remains in their innovative use of rhythmic structures and their influence on the electronic and trance scenes.
