Dino Piana (3 August 1930 â 6 November 2023) was an Italian jazz trombonist from Refrancore. Piana studied trumpet and accordion before switching to the trombone at age 15. In 1959, Piana appeared on the radio contest La coppa del jazz. He performed with the Quintetto di Torino and the Basso-Valdambrini quintet. In 1969, Piana joined the RAI orchestra, where he remained until 1995. Piana performed in the big bands of Thad Jones and Bob Brookmeyer. His collaborations included Charles Mingus, Chet Baker, Gerry Mulligan, and Enrico Rava. In 1978, Piana established the Dino e Franco Piana Jazz Orchestra with his son, flugelhorn player Franco Piana. Piana performed at Umbria Jazz and the New York Town Hall. His discography includes the albums Così con Dino Piana (1962) and Al Gir Dal Bughi (2021). Piana died in Rome on 6 November 2023.
