Biography

Dig is an American alternative rock band from Los Angeles, California. Formed in 1991 by Scott Hackwith, alongside drummer Anthony Smedile, guitarist Jon Morris, guitarist Johnny Cornwell, and bassist Phil Friedmann. The band’s early independent release, the Runt EP (1992), introduced a four‑guitar sound that foreshadowed their shoegaze influences. In 1993, after signing with Radioactive Records, Dig issued their self‑titled album Dig; the single "Believe" reached number 19 on the Billboard Modern Rock Chart and entered the UK Singles Chart at number 83. The follow‑up Defenders of the Universe (1996) failed to chart, and a 1999 release, Life Like, saw the band reduced to a four‑piece; the album did not enter the Billboard 200. Following a brief disbandment in 1999, Dig reassembled in 2004 for sporadic shows, then again in 2016, adding new members while maintaining Hackwith, Morris, and Cornwell. The group released the single "Nothing Is Forever" in 2021 and, after a hiatus, issued their fourth album on August 29, 2025.
