Derek Wadsworth, born on February 5, 1939, in Cleckheaton, Yorkshire, United Kingdom, was a jazz musician, composer, and arranger. He began playing the cornet at an early age before switching to the trombone at eleven. In the late 1950s, Wadsworth played in bands in Huddersfield and later moved to London in the early 1960s. His career took off when he became the musical director for singer Dusty Springfield in the mid-1960s and for a Diana Ross world tour. He also held the same position in the musical Hair from 1968 to 1973. Wadsworth's first arranging work was for Spring and Port Wine in 1970. Throughout the 1970s, he toured extensively with Georgie Fame, Humphrey Lyttelton, Maynard Ferguson, Graham Collier, and John Dankworth. He also composed and arranged music for the television drama series Space: 1999, including its main theme tune in 1975. Wadsworth died suddenly on December 3, 2008.
