Biography

Denyce Graves, born on March 7, 1964, in Washington D.C., is an American mezzo-soprano opera singer. She graduated from the Duke Ellington School of the Arts and studied voice at Oberlin Conservatory of Music and New England Conservatory of Music with Helen Hodam. Graves began her professional career after joining the Wolf Trap Opera Company and the Houston Opera Studio from 1988 to 1990. She made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1995, performing in various operas and becoming known for titular roles in Carmen and Samson and Delilah. In 2005, Graves hosted the radio program Voce di Donna and sang the national anthem at President George W. Bush's second inauguration. She has performed at a memorial service for victims of 9/11 and won several awards, including the Golden Plate Award from the American Academy of Achievement in 2019.
