Countess, a Dutch black metal band, formed in 1992. The group was founded by Bathory fans Vercingetorix and Zénon. Their debut album, The Gospel of the Horned One, was recorded in 1992 but released in August 1993 through Thurisaz Productions, a label founded by Orlok, who joined as bassist and later took over vocals. The band's lineup changed frequently, with notable members including Othalaz, Imogem, and Sablast. Countess gained attention for their raw, primitive sound. They released subsequent albums such as The Return of the Horned One (1994) and Ad Maiorem Sathanae Gloriam (1995), which showcased their evolving style. Despite lineup changes and periods of inactivity, Countess released the albums Ancient Lies and Battle Cries (2014), Fires of Destiny (2016), and Banners of Blood (2021).
