David Wiffen, born on March 11, 1942 in Redhill, Surrey, England, was a folk singer-songwriter who moved to Canada at sixteen. He began his career with the Black Cat Skiffle group and released his first solo album, David Wiffen at the Bunkhouse Coffeehouse, Vancouver BC, in 1965. In 1971, he signed with Fantasy Records and released his self-titled debut album featuring hit singles "One Step" and "More Often Than Not", as well as the widely covered song "Driving Wheel". His second solo studio album, Coast to Coast Fever (1973), was produced by Bruce Cockburn. David Wiffen's career faced challenges due to alcohol abuse and diminishing success. He ceased performing and worked as a limousine driver before releasing South of Somewhere in 1999. In 2015, Songs from the Lost and Found was released, containing material recorded between 1973 and the early 1980s. David Wiffen died on April 5, 2026 in Ottawa, Ontario, at the age of 84.
