Biography

Born into a religious family in Tomball, Texas, David Phelps was singing in church from a very young age, quickly making a name for himself locally at conventions and church gatherings, sometimes performing with his sisters Sherri Proctor and Kerri Lee, themselves both musicians. He achieved a music degree at the Christian Baylor University in Waco, Texas and such was his talent that music industry professionals urged him to move into opera and other musical fields. But he self-released his first album 'Journey to Grace' in 1994 and maintained his loyalty to Christian music, replacing Jonathan Pierce as tenor singer in the Gaither Vocal Band on their award-winning 1998 album 'Still the Greatest Story Ever Told'. His reputation grew with the solo albums 'Joy Joy', 'Revelation' and 'Life Is a Church'. He also released a series of Christmas albums and diversified in style, exploring the music of Beethoven, Puccini, Irving Berlin and Rodgers & Hammerstein on the 2012 'Classic' album, which reached the top ten in both the Christian and Classical Charts. He was back in the top ten again with 'Freedom' in 2015 and then announced his departure from the Gaither Vocal Band for a second time to work on his 2017 album 'Hymnal', mixing his own original material with modern hymns and contemporary arrangements, featuring guitar, keyboards and brass, and an a capella version of 'Amazing Grace'.
