Born on March 17, 1963, in Los Angeles, California, Cunnie Williams was a soul / R&B singer best known for his hit singles âSaturdayâ featuring Monie Love, âA World Celebrationâ featuring Heavy D, and âCome Back to Me.â Originally interested in a career playing basketball, Cunnie Williams ultimately chose a career in music and moved to Hanover, Germany to be with his partner. He caught the attention of several labels thanks to his voice, which was often compared to soul icon Barry White. His first two singles â âThe World Keeps Fallinââ and âSuddenly Itâs Magicâ â were only released in Germany in 1994. The following year, he released his debut album, Cominâ from the Heart of the Ghetto, which caught the attention of European audiences. He achieved international commercial success with his third album, Star Hotel (1999), which included the hit singles âSaturdayâ featuring Monie Love (number 35 in France / number 24 in Italy) and âA World Celebrationâ featuring Heavy D (number 87 in France / number 49 in Italy). Cunnie Williams scored several more hits â 2002âs âCome Back to Meâ (number 14 in France / number 15 in Belgium) and âWar Songâ (number 57 in France) â but after the French-only single âSuperstarâ (2004), his recording career fizzled out. He had a brief resurgence in 2008 with the release of a new album â No Place Like Home â and a Best Of collection, but they failed to resuscitate his career. Cunnie Williams died on August 30, 2024, at the age of 61.
